WarGames: Google vs. Apple

The Apple Army goes to work. The Apple Army goes to work

Photo illustration by Jim Festante/Slate. Photo by iStockphoto.

Reminder: Matt Yglesias and Farhad Manjoo are wargaming a fanciful, definitely-not-actually-true version of what might happen if Google and Apple went to war. You can see how the battle began here.

As of Oct. 25, 2013 Apple has:
Cash on hand
: $140 billion
Personnel
: 100,000
Territory controlled
: Offices, retail stores, factories, and the political allegiances of China, Europe, the Middle East, and a growing number of Americans.

There?s a grim mood in the hastily assembled Cupertino, Calif., bunker where Apple?s executives have hunkered down. But the phone is ringing off the hook. Google?s tactics, though devastatingly effective, are also terrifying to many citizens. While click-dependent digital media may buckle under to Google?s demands, television remains Americans? main source of news and the offline coverage of Google?s offensive is devastating. The New York Times is able to get by on traffic from iOS devices (mobile is the future, after all), and a solid minority of American digital media sticks with Apple, hoping for a larger share of a smaller pie. Meanwhile, a European Union already worried about Google?s monopoly power and concerned about surveillance moves decisively into backlash mode, barring the company from doing business in Europe and seizing its fixed assets there. And while it?s true that Google has many offerings Apple can?t beat, it?s also true that Germany entered World War I with the strongest overall military.

War is a game of coalitions. Not only are there whole countries where Google barely exists (think China), but there?s a whole world of online services companies out there who?ve been chomping at the bit for a big Google scandal to get them into the game. Bing search, Outlook webmail, Yahoo Calendar, and Dropbox for storage. Google?s one-stop shopping is a convenience, but people in Google-hostile territory can use the Web without it and the company?s behavior is frightening people. Apple?s hearty band of loyalists can shop at the Apple Store and punch apple.com into the browser just fine?and while they?re there, many of them are adding their contact information to a new page which urges Apple fans to join the ?Apple Army.? The photo accompanying sign-up shows a cheerful, attractive, multicultural group massed in front of Apple headquarters, everyone wearing T-shirts of bright, primary colors. In the first week, 20,000 Apple partisans sign up. ?

And Google has forgotten the fundamental reality that the Internet is a physical entity. Customers are a little surprised to find every Apple Store in the Portland area closed at lunchtime, but it?s just a quick 90-minute jaunt down I-84 to Google?s data center at The Dalles, Ore., one of six within the United States. Tim Cook never really thought it would come to this, but as Apple?s longtime logistics guy he?s always made sure the company can get its hands on demolition and construction materials at a moment?s notice. And what can be used to renovate a store can be used to wreck a data center just about as easily. No government officials or law enforcement personnel will explicitly take Google on, of course, but everyone knows that if the data centers are destroyed so is the possibility for blackmail so it?s strictly hands-off. Meanwhile, other wrecking crews are already in motion heading out of Greensboro, Omaha, Atlanta, Charlotte, and Tulsa to attack the other data centers.

Earthbound

This young adult novel is a complicated, addictive ride that ends with a doozy of a twist.

Earthbound, by Aprilynne Pike, Razorbill, 352 pp.

It?s usually a good sign when I read the first 30 pages of a book one day and devour the following 300 pages the next. Such was the case with Earthbound, Aprilynne Pike?s superb new young adult novel. It?s a complicated, intoxicating, and surprising ride that I literally couldn?t put down until I read it all.

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

The key word here is complicated. Summarizing the intricate plot without (a) revealing huge spoilers or (b) writing 4,000 words would be a challenge, as every detail is significant. No one likes the phrase ?You?ll just have to read the book to see how it ends,? but now I know why it?s said.

As the sole survivor of a plane crash that killed her parents and 254 other passengers, Tavia Michaels is headline news around the country. To avoid the media, she decamps to Portsmouth, N.H., to live with distant relatives and undergo therapy for mental trauma and a shattered leg. Haunted by guilt and vivid nightmares, she?s just trying to keep her head above water.

After a few months, Tavia begins to see glowing triangles around town, people randomly vanishing, and a mysterious hunk named Quinn to whom she feels an intense, inexplicable attraction. She also discovers that she can create matter out of thin air. Worried that she?s hallucinating, she confides in her psychotherapist and her one friend, a library nerd named Benson who knows about the crash. Benson is a wonderful guy: smart, easygoing, and a great counterbalance for her (secret crush alert!).

The good news is that Tavia isn?t hallucinating. The bad news is that her admission sets off a chain of events with lethal consequences, putting her up against a millennia-old secret and unimaginable danger.

When she overhears her aunt and uncle saying that she might be killed within days ? and fearing that they?re the killers ? Tavia and Benson flee to Maine on a tip from Quinn to dig up as much information as they can. There they uncover ancient warring brotherhoods, the reason for Quinn and Tavia?s powerful connection, and a ticking time bomb of destiny, history, and forces beyond their control.

Given how much I enjoyed "Earthbound," it almost feels cheap to point out any weaknesses. Still, there were two eye-rollers that I couldn't ignore. First, let?s discuss Tavia?s initial introduction to Quinn:

?Leaf green eyes look up at me with a calm as deep as the waters of Lake Michigan. His jaw is angular, but the curve of his mouth softens the lines and his sooty lashes do the rest.... [G]olden hair.... well-defined abs.... his voice is deep, but soft. Dark chocolate.?

Pardon me, but did a Danielle Steel manuscript find its way into this young adult novel? The voice and style here are poles apart from Tavia?s terse monologue. Fortunately, no other passage in the book rivals this one for pure bodice-ripping cheesiness. In contrast, Benson?s first depiction is nearly nonexistent: khakis, plaid shirt, messy hair. Done and done.

Second, Pike shilly-shallies around love scenes. I do understand that Pike is writing for a young audience and appreciate her desire to keep things appropriate, but that doesn?t justify repetitive, unclear prose from a bestselling author. How many times must we hear that Tavia caresses someone?s stubble or that Benson grabs the back of her neck while they?re kissing?

On several occasions, Pike makes abrupt shifts in passion level with no transitions. It?s disorienting to leap from a couple?s frenzied kisses to them waking up together the next morning, without any explanation or bridge. I?m not asking for graphic details ? readers just like to know what happened and what didn?t. Pike needs to tell us clearly and not to tiptoe around the issue.

Happily, these weaknesses fade once the final scenes unfold. And oh, what final scenes they are! I knew "Earthbound" couldn?t end without resolving the (seemingly) unresolvable Benson/Quinn dilemma, but I never once suspected what was coming. This was a rug-pulling, backstabbing, explosive doozy of a twist. Well played, Aprilynne Pike!

"Earthbound" fuses intricacy and intensity to create a captivating young adult drama. If you?re looking for a breezy, noncommittal beach read, consider yourself warned: You may find yourself camped on that beach for the rest of the day. Because once you start "Earthbound," you won't be going anywhere until you've turned the final pages.

MMA Factory - Arizona State University

Yesterday I posted a piece about Oklahoma St University, and the amount of MMA talent they are producing on a regular basis. Arizona St University is another programs quickly becoming linked to some of the best MMA talent. Let's take a look at the wrestlers who have gone through ASU, and then moved into MMA. There are a lot of MMA, and UFC victories on this list.

Dan Severn - Severn was a multiple time All American at ASU, and then coached at the school during the 1980's. During the 80's he was active in international wrestling, competing in both Greco Roman, and Freestyle. Severn entered the world of MMA at UFC 4, and just retired in early 2013, with a MMA record of 101-19.

Don Frye - Frye was coached by Severn at ASU from 1984-1987, before he transfered to another MMA factory Oklahoma St for his Senior season. He launched his MMA career at UFC 8, and rushed out to a 15-1 record, with the only loss in that time coming to Mark Coleman in the finals of the UFC 10 tourney. His final MMA record was 20-9.

Dan Henderson - Henderson is an undisputed legend in the sport of MMA. After winning the UFC 17tournament, he became a champion in Pride and Strikeforce. Henderson also has challenged for UFC Middleweight, and Light-Heavyweight Gold. During his time at Arizona St. he was an NCAA tourney qualifier, before moving on to become a 2 x Olympian in Greco Roman wrestling. 29-10 MMA.

Erik Larkin - Larkin was a 4 x All-American, winning the NCAA title, and Dan Hodge trophy for most outstanding wrestler in 2003. He then coached at ASU from 2005-2009, while failing in a bid for the 2008 Olympics. Not starting MMA until age 30, his career was only 4 fights, where he went 3-1, with his last fight in 2011 for Bellator.

Cain Velasquez - The Current UFC HW Champion has been a force of nature since joining the UFC in 2008, only 2 fights into his MMA career. After a stint in Junior College, Cain was a 2 x Division 1 All-American in at ASU. His MMA record stands at 12-1.

Ryan Bader - Bader broke into the UFC by winning TUF: 8. He was a 2 x All-American in College, many thought that Bader would someday be a title contender. To this point he has fallen short in his bids to earn a title shot, but is a solid top 10 fighter, who has wins over Lil' Nog, and Rampage Jackson to his credit and a 15-3 MMA record.

John Moraga - Moraga will be the next challenger for the UFC Flyweight title. He wrestled four years at Arizona St., qualifying for the NCAA Tourney once. The general lack of depth in the UFC FLW division has allowed Moraga to go from almost unknown regional fighter to unknown UFC fighter with a title shot after two stoppage victories in his first two UFC fights. Moraga?s record stands at 13-1.

CB Dollaway - Much like Bader, Dolloway used TUF to find his way into UFC. Dollaway was an All-American at ASU, and had a ton of hype when he brought an undefeated record onto the reality show, but was submitted not once, but twice by Amir Sadollah. He has a 13-4 MMA record, and is 7-4 UFC record.

Aaron Simpson - Wrestling for and becoming an All-American at Arizona St. was not enough for Simpson, as he then returned to the school to become an assistant coach for 9 years, and coaching guys like Moraga, Dollaway, Bader, and Velasquez. He has said in some interviews that it was the success and persuading of his former athletes that helped talk him into getting serious about MMA in 2007. Simpson has a 12-5 record in MMA.

Clifford Starks - Another ASU wrestler who reached the UFC level is Starks. A MW in MMA, Starks spent time wrestling as a HW at ASU, and had a 3rd place Pac-10 finish to his credit. Stark's run in UFC started well, but followed with two straight losses and was cut from the roster. His MMA record stands at 8-2.

Bubba Jenkins - After a good run at Penn St., Jenkins transfered to ASU where he won an NCAA title in 2011. Combine that with his even more impressive Junior World Freestyle Wrestling title, and Jenkins is considered one of the best young prospects in MMA. He MMA record stands at 3-0, and he will be making his debut with Bellator on July 31st.

Kyle Kingsbury - Kingsbury was never an ASU wrestler, but he was a member of the ASU Football team in 2003-2004. Kingsbury made his way into UFC through the same TUF: 8 season as Ryan Bader. His MMA record is 11-5.

Who might be the next guy in the pipeline? If an ASU wrestler is going to move to MMA, it is likely he will be training in one of the three places. Arizona Combat Sports is the place where guys like Bader, Dollaway, Simpson, Moraga and Starks got their starts. When Bader Dollaway, and Simpson became successful at the UFC level they broke away and started their own camp, Power MMA & Fitness. The third location is American Kickboxing Academy, where Cain Velasquez, and Kyle Kingsbury have trained since the start of their career. The MMA Lab located in Phoenix, AZ is another nearby option for ASU students who want to pursue a career in MMA. It is the home to UFC LW Champ Ben Henderson, and several other quality MMA fighters. John Moraga has trained there at times in the past, but to this point, none of the guys from ASU have made it their main training camp.

A couple of the better wrestler who finished up their ASU career this year are?

Levi Cooper - Wrestled at Heavyweight for ASU from 2010-2013, and garnered an 8th place finish at the NCAA Tournament in 2011, making him an All-American. He qualified for the NCAA tournament his last two seasons at ASU, but came up short of repeating as an All-American.

Jake Meredith - A former PAC-10 Champion, and two time NCAA qualifier. He wrestled at 184 lbs early in his career, before finishing at 197lbs his senior season. He was ranked in the top 10 Nationally at times during his senior year. His linkedIn profile list him as an Intern at PowerMMA & Fitness the gym owned by Ryan Bader, CB Dollaway, and Aaron Simpson, so seeing him make the jump to MMA would be very easy.

Cooper and Meredith are the two most well know, but there are many wrestlers in the ASU wrestling room who could emerge as the next top talent coming out of ASU.

Apple Testing for Larger iPhone, iPad Screens

Apple Testing for Larger iPhone, iPad Screens

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Apple is testing for larger screen sizes on the iPhone and iPad.

The phone size standards are set for over the iPhone?s current four inches wide. The dimensions would be similar to the Samsung Galaxy, which has a wide screen but a similar height to the iPhone.

The new iPad size is set to be around 13 inches wide, which is much larger than the current 9.7 inch screen.

Apple has not committed to changing the sizes on the next generation of any product. It was also noted that Apple will attempt to release a version of the iPhone at a more affordable price by using a cheaper, non-metal alternative for the phone?s casing.

(AP) ? New York City's LaGuardia Airport fully reopened Tuesday, a day after the collapse of a plane's front landing gear sent it skidding along the tarmac and temporarily closed the airport.

The nose gear of Southwest Airlines flight 345 arriving from Nashville, Tenn., collapsed Monday right after the plane touched down on the runway, officials said.

"When we got ready to land, we nosedived," said a passenger, Sgt. 1st Class Anniebell Hanna of the South Carolina National Guard.

Ten passengers were treated at the scene, and six were taken to a hospital with minor injuries, said Thomas Bosco, acting director of aviation for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which oversees the area airports. The six crew members were taken to another hospital for observation.

Bosco said there was no advance warning of any possible problem before the landing.

He said the nose gear of the plane collapsed when it landed at 5:40 p.m., and "the aircraft skidded down the runway on its nose and then veered off and came to rest in the grass area."

He said the collapse closed the airport for more than an hour. Both of the airport's runways were back in use by Tuesday morning, a Port Authority spokesman said, and the plane was being moved to a hangar.

Dallas-based Southwest said 150 people were on the flight, while the Port Authority said the total was 149.

The flight was delayed leaving Nashville. Passengers heard an announcement saying "something was wrong with a tire," said Hanna, 43. She and some family members were coming to New York for a visit.

When the plane landed, "I hit my head against the seat in front of me," she said. "I hit hard."

The nose of the plane was "completely down on the ground," said Richard Strauss, who was on a nearby plane waiting to take off. "It's something that I've never seen before. It's bizarre."

Emergency crews were seen spraying foam toward the front end of the plane on the tarmac.

A rear stairwell or slide could be seen extending from the Southwest flight, said Strauss, who owns a Washington public relations firm. His plane, which was about 100 yards from the Southwest flight, wasn't allowed to taxi back to the gate, he said.

The Port Authority said the passengers exited the plane by using chutes. Hanna said she was among the first to get off the plane, and could smell something burning when she got down to the tarmac. The passengers were put on a bus and taken to the terminal.

The FAA is investigating, as is the National Transportation Safety Board.

Bobby Abtahi, an attorney trying to catch a flight to Dallas, was watching from the terminal and heard a crowd reacting.

"I heard some people gasp and scream. I looked over and saw sparks flying at the front of the plane," he said.

The landing gear collapse came 16 days after Asiana Flight 214 crash-landed at San Francisco's airport, killing two Chinese teenagers; a third was killed when a fire truck ran over her while responding to the crash, authorities said. Dozens of people were injured in that landing, which involved a Boeing 777 flying from South Korea.

Longtime pilot Patrick Smith, author of "Cockpit Confidential: Everything You Need to Know About Air Travel. Questions, Answers, and Reflections" and AskthePilot.com, said landing gear issues are not high on the list of worries for pilots.

"From a pilot's perspective, this is nearly a non-issue," he said. "They make for good television, but this is far down the list of nightmares for pilots."

Community remembers victims of Wheatland crash

Posted at: 07/21/2013 8:23 PM | Updated at: 07/21/2013 11:16 PM
By: Joangel Concepcion | WHEC.com

A community is vowing to stand together strong. They gathered together Sunday night to remember three young people who lost their lives and two more who are fighting to stay alive after Tuesday's crash in Wheatland.

It was a horrific crash that touched so many people in our area.

The people closest to the victims describe them as caring, good hearted, strong kids, who were very involved in the community. All five volunteered at a? program for students with disabilities in Batavia.

They were on their way home last Tuesday afternoon when they crashed on State Route 36.

Taylor Binnert, 21, and Christopher Peterson, 20, seated in the front, were killed when Binnert's Jeep Wrangler crashed into a tractor trailer. Peterson's 17 year-old sister Emily later died at the hospital on Friday.

Two other passengers, Micheala Murphy, 17, and Joanne Kruchten, 20, were injured in the crash. They're still in guarded condition at Strong Memorial Hospital.

News10NBC was at a vigil held for the victims Sunday night.

You could see the pain on all of their faces as they gathered at Caledonia-Mumford Central School where all five of the victims graduated.

There is a new name for the victims. The community is calling them the ?Cal-Mum-5.?

Sunday night the victims who died were remembered and the community prayed for the two who are still fighting to live.

Hundreds of people, family members, friends, co-workers and even complete strangers, stood together, leaning on one another for support.

One by one they lit candles and many were brave enough to share stories and memories of the victims that did not survive the crash.

It was a ceremony full of tears and hugs, but they constantly talked about how the community has really come together throughout this tragedy.

These victims were so young, but News10NBC is told they were loved by many because they were so involved in the community.

News10NBC heard from several people at the vigil Sunday.

?There's a bigger plan for our three angels and they are going to look over Jo and Michaela and help them pull through. We can continue to find a lesson to be learned from this situation, but the only one that can be known is how precious life can be. So be sure to live your life to the fullest. Be kind. Be happy. Forgive easily and spread love. It is much easier said than done, but together we will make it through,? said one friend of the victims.

?We should all take a lesson out of this experience and that is to live life to the fullest and try to make the most of every single day that we have here, because no one ever knows how short life can be,? said Taylor Binnert's Brother.

Five Star Bank has established a fund for donations to the families of the crash victims. Checks should be made out to "Cal-Mum 5." Checks and cash donations may be taken to the Five Star Branch in Caledonia or mailed to Five Star Bank, 3110 Main St., Caledonia, NY 14423.

Why oil companies are leaving the Gulf of Mexico

New drilling technologies have contributed to exponential production gains for onshore oil and natural gas in the United States.?The Gulf of Mexico is still giving up substantial amounts of oil, but some companies seem to be betting the biggest bonanza will be onshore.

Former BP Chief Executive John Browne helped nab 1.9 million net acres in the agreement with Apache last week. Baseball: Slammers rally, hold off Miners

Baseball at Silver Cross Field on Saturday started with a daytime camp for school-age pitchers and catchers, many with big league dreams.

It continued at night with a Frontier League game between the Joliet Slammers and Southern Illinois Miners, older players with the same major league aspirations.

The first inning, though, was a nightmare for Slammers starter Shawn Kale as the first five Miners reached base in a four-run inning.

But Kale settled down, Joliet rallied to go ahead 5-4 and 7-5 and held on for a 7-6 win to clinch its fifth series victory in the last six.

?That?s been the mindset, believing that we can come from behind and win games,?? said first baseman Kyle Maunus, in his third season with the team.

The Slammers (24-29) are within five games of the .500 mark for the first time since June 19 when they were 12-17.

?We?ve just got to keep playing good baseball,?? manager Mike Breyman said. ?Tonight we kind of stole one.??

Nick Akins? team-leading ninth home run put the Slammers ahead 6-5 in the fifth inning.

Newcomer Joe Meggs had an RBI single to drive in Maunus (walk) for a 7-6 lead. Meggs is a rookie outfielder out of the University of Washington who was signed Friday.

?It was back and forth and every run is important in those games,?? Meggs said. ?I was just trying to hit something hard up the middle. You want to help the team any way you can, especially early on.??

The Slammers used six pitchers?Kale, Mike Barsotti, Lucas Goodgion, Chase Doremus, Brett Zawacki and closer Justin Erasmus in the ninth for his 13th save.

?I found a way to get out of the first, just keep battling and put up zeros,?? Kale said. ?Some of the guys definitely picked me up in the dugout, Maunus and (David) Christensen.

(Catcher) Ben Hewett did a great job. He kept me in there. He was picking me up.??

The Slammers sent 11 batters to the plate in the fourth inning and went ahead 5-4 on two hits, four walks, a hit batter and an error.

?Good at-bats, we worked the counts,?? Breyman said.

Akins doubled to score Niko Vasquez (base hit), Maunus hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Marquis Riley (walk) and Akins scored when Nate Wilder reached on an error. Wilder and Hewett both scored on bases-loaded walks to give Joliet a 5-4 lead.

?We told Kale after that big inning nothing was really hit that hard,?? Maunus said. ?We?ll come back. Just keep us in this ballgame. We?ll scratch a few across.??

?Kale could have went back out there and folded,?? Breyman said. ?After that first inning, he settled in and got his five innings.??

Rookie right-hander Matt Dillon (1-1, 2.38 ERA), from Mount Olive College in North Carolina, will start for the Slammers in the series finale at 2:05 p.m. Sunday.

BYU Classic Football Face-off: BYU/Miami (1990) vs. BYU/Penn State (1992)

It's time to determine the greatest BYU football game ever ? and it's all up to you.

This matchup features the No. 1 and No. 4 seeds in the Home Games region, a triumph over a defending national champion and a victory over one of the winningest coaches in history.

(Click here to see the entire bracket)

Which one will move on and which one will be eliminated? Be sure to cast your vote in the poll on the right side of the screen to decide which of these was the greater moment for BYU football.

Here is a look at today's matchup:

No. 1 seed

BYU 28, Miami 21 (1990)

Records and AP ranking (entering the game): BYU 1-0 (No. 16), Miami 0-0 (No. 1)

What happened: The Cougars welcomed the top-ranked Hurricanes, who were also the defending national champions, to Provo. BYU started moving the ball up and down the field on the vaunted Miami defense on its way to nearly 500 yards of offense, but five turnovers made it a see-saw battle. With the fans in LaVell Edwards Stadium urging their team on, the Cougars took the lead on a TD pass from Ty Detmer to Mike Salido late in the third quarter. A pair of huge pass breakups near the goal line preserved a signature win for BYU.

Signature play: In on the touchdown pass to Salido, Detmer dropped back, slipped out from between two Miami defenders who crashed into each other, rolled to his right, waited for the Hurricanes to converge and then passed to Salido. Salido had originally stayed in to block but slipped out of the backfield to make the TD catch.

What it meant: The victory marked the only time the Cougars have ever defeated the top-ranked team in the country and set Detmer on a course the would result in him winning the 1990 Heisman Trophy. Miami ended up ranked No. 3 at the end of the year.

No. 4 seed

BYU 30, Penn State 17 (1992)

Records and AP ranking (entering the game):?BYU 4-4 (NR), Penn State 6-2 (No. 14)

What happened:?The Cougars surprised everyone as they took on a talented Nittany Lion squad and outplayed them for most of the game. BYU was coming off a big loss to Notre Dame but a trio of touchdown passes by Cougar quarterback Ryan Hancock and a rushing score by Kalin Hall gave BYU an impressive 27-3 lead at the half. Penn State rallied late behind the play of quarterback Kerry Collins but could never get close enough to threaten.

Signature play:?Late in the first half, Hancock went deep to speedster Tyler Anderson, who made the catch and went all the way for an 80-yard score.

What it meant:?In a season that saw four different QBs play for the Cougars, BYU never found its rhythm but still came up with a signature win against Joe Paterno and his Nittany Lions.

Jared Lloyd's Take

I don't know if there is much of an argument with this one as the win over a decent Penn State team was nice ... but it's not in the same stratosphere as the titanic victory over the Hurricanes.

James Petras, the Israel Lobby and the Jews The Marxist sociologist James Petras is one of those proverbial white elephants on the left who purchase into a relatively barmy ideology replete with demonstratively false assumptions (such as the denial of the animality of man) and with an appalling failure rate in practicality, but yet act like autistic savants on one or two issues. Petras; a fairly distinguished leftist academically, for all his ideological baggage that identifies him as a relatively orthodox Marxist-Leninist: is actually one of the most intelligent critics of the Israel Lobby. In many respects the problems with Petras' ideological framework; i.e. Marxist class analysis, actually serve as a boon to his analysis of the Israel Lobby. This is because Petras; unlike so many, knows that; like any good Marxist political theorist does, he has to account for political fashion, a constantly evolving elite political class, the origin of that political class, different schools of opinion within that class and also the power of lobbies, vested interests and most fundamental of all: money. (1) In essence Petras sees the political system of the United States not as a monolith, but as a hydra with each head in competition for predominance over the others: sometimes allying with another head while other times attacking it dependent on the head's perceived interests of the moment. By doing this Petras removes the common misconceptio ...

What?s wrong with the global oil market?

Recent developments in domestic energy production have shifted the political debate about energy independence. Yet as the discussion focuses on finding a desirable mix of American energy sources, policy decisions must account for a global oil market distorted by the interventions of foreign governments.

Some may think this doesn?t matter because the domestic oil boom offers the United States a chance to reclaim the title of the world?s largest oil producer. Estimates suggest that there are more than seven billion barrels of oil in shale formations in the Dakotas and Montana alone. If more federal lands were opened to exploration, there is no doubt Americans could soon lose the need to import oil.

Yet even under this welcome scenario, America would not be truly energy independent. Increased domestic production, however beneficial, cannot insulate the price Americans pay at the pump from the global price of oil. Whether extracted in North Dakota or Saudi Arabia, oil is a commodity priced in global markets. Increased domestic production will not diminish the role played by the OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) cartel.

Securing America?s Future Energy (SAFE), an organization that seeks to protect American national and economic security through reduced oil dependence, asked us to survey the literature on the global oil market. We reviewed hundreds of articles from the economics and policy literature, as well as dozens of experts? congressional testimony. This review identified three important aspects of the oil market that policy makers should keep in mind.

First, the oil market is far from the free market of economics textbooks. OPEC, which came to prominence in the 1970s, is what MIT professor and oil expert Morris Adelman termed a ?clumsy cartel.? When it is effective, it has an impact. OPEC works to restrict supply. Saudi Arabia?s announcement in January 2013 that it had cut production five percent in December 2012 led oil prices for February delivery to climb 72 cents per barrel. Monopolies drive up prices and lower productivity and misallocate resources. One study estimated the cost of OPEC to the U.S. economy was as much as $500 billion in 2008.

The price volatility caused by OPEC harms American interests no matter how the price moves. When OPEC forces the price of oil higher, Americans have transferred a premium to OPEC nations beyond what the competitive market price of oil would have been. When OPEC suffers a collapse, the price at times has fallen so low as to disincentivize alternatives to oil, as well as new, higher-cost oil supplies.

Second, the stability of OPEC itself depends heavily on non-market factors. OPEC functions poorly when its members are fighting wars with each other (as Iran and Iraq did between 1980 and 1988). It functions more effectively when it has support from the outside, as it did when the Nixon Administration used higher oil prices as a means of subsidizing allies like the Shah of Iran without asking Congress to authorize sending a check.

Third, most of the world?s oil reserves outside the United States are controlled by government-owned oil companies such as Venezuela?s PDVSA or the Saudi Arabian Oil Company (Saudi Aramco). They behave quite differently from profit-maximizing firms. Unlike in the United States, where mineral rights are often privately owned, in the rest of the world mineral rights belong to governments. Autocrats use control of their nations? oil resources as a political tool.

Movie review: Love and gender get upended in 'Laurence Anyways ...

| Breaking Glass Pictures Laurence (Melvil Poupaud, left) and Fred (Suzanne Cl?ment) are lovers whose relationship is upended by Laurence's startling announcement -- that he wants to be a woman -- in the drama "Laurence Anyways."

Review ? Big emotions fill Canadian drama.

The other night, I heard a story on NPR about how some college-age people are getting less hung up about defining themselves by the traditional "gender binary" of male or female.

There may come a day when sexual identity is as unique as a fingerprint, and the familiar acronym LGBTQ ? lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer ? will be meaningless as anything other than a bad Scrabble draw. When that happens, movies like the vibrant and touching French-Canadian drama "Laurence Anyways" may be seen as milestones on that journey.

?

HHHhj

?Laurence Anyways?

The relationship between a man and a woman ? and what happens when the man wants to become a woman ? is explored in this exuberant drama.

Where ? Broadway Centre Cinemas.

When ? Opens Friday, July 19.

Rating ? Not rated, but probably R for sexuality, nudity and language.

Running time ? 168 minutes; in French with subtitles.

Writer-director Xavier Dolan?s story is of two Montreal lovers, Laurence (Melvil Poupaud) and Frederique, aka Fred (Suzanne Cl?ment). They share the same bed, the same tastes in music and the same jokes. That is, until the day Laurence declares to Fred that he wants to be a woman.

Fred tries to deal with this transition and even helps out by giving Laurence makeup tips. But both of them struggle with the next steps, as Laurence ponders the fluidity of his identity and Fred wonders whether she can still love the man she first fell for when he?s no longer a man.

The story progresses through most of the 1990s, as Laurence and Fred fall in and out of love. Dolan paints them not as types but as specific figures ? two people who can?t live without each other, but can?t live with each other very well, either.

Each has family concerns, as well. Laurence has his mother (played by the French star Nathalie Baye), who tries to be sympathetic but is often distant. Laurence also discovers an impromptu family of aging drag artists. Meanwhile, Fred has her sarcastic sister St?fanie (Monia Chokri), whose barbs are stinging and deadly accurate.

Dolan plays every moment out in grandiose style. His images are bursting with color, his soundtrack loaded with ?90s pop classics, the dialogue flowery and smart ? it helps that Laurence is a literature professor ? and the emotions unbridled.

The only significant weakness to "Laurence Anyways" is Dolan?s inability to edit, which is why the movie clocks in at nearly three hours. But even the scenes that feel extraneous crackle with excitement and fierce emotion. Whether Laurence wears a suit or a blouse, the movie always wears its heart on its sleeve.

Italy: 5 convicted for Costa Concordia shipwreck

GROSSETO, Italy (AP) ? An Italian court on Saturday convicted five employees of an Italian cruise company over the Costa Concordia shipwreck that killed 32 crew and passengers, handing down a maximum sentence of two years and 10 months reached in plea bargains.

The guilty verdicts for multiple manslaughter and negligence were the first reached in the tragic sinking of the cruise liner carrying more than 4,000 crew and passengers near the Tuscan shore in January 2012.

The ship's captain, the only remaining defendant, was denied a plea bargain and is being tried separately.

Lawyers representing the victims complained that the sentences agreed in the plea bargain ? all below three years ? were inadequate for the gravity of the disaster.

"It seems like a sentence for illegal construction," said Massimiliano Gabrielli. "It's an embarrassment."

Another lawyer for victims, Daniele Bocciolini, called the sentences "insufficient" and questioned the prosecutors' hypothesis placing the lion's share of the blame on Capt. Francesco Schettino, who faces up to 20 years if found guilty.

The five employees of Costa Crociere SpA, the cruise company, were charged for their respective roles in the nautical maneuver that put the ship in peril, evacuation and response to the emergency.

The longest sentence went to the company's crisis coordinator, who was sentenced to two years and 10 months. Concordia's hotel director was sentenced to two years and six months while two bridge officers and a helmsman got sentences ranging from one year and eight months to one year and 11 months. The bridge officials and helmsman were also convicted of a charge of causing a shipwreck, in addition to multiple manslaughter and negligence.

The court's reasoning for its decision will be released within 90 days, as is standard in Italy.

"I don't think there are any more doubt about the responsibility that falls above all on the shoulders of Schettino," said Prosecutor Francesco Verusio.

Schettino is charged with manslaughter for causing the shipwreck off the Tuscan island of Giglio and abandoning the vessel with thousands aboard. That trial opened this week, and was continued after two hearings until the end of September.

The Concordia, on a week-long Mediterranean cruise, speared a jagged granite reef when, prosecutors allege, Schettino steered the ship too close to Giglio's rocky shores as a favor to a crewman whose relatives live on the island. Schettino has denied the charges and insisted that the rock was not in nautical maps.

The reef sliced a 70-meter-long (230-foot) gash in the hull. Seawater rushed in, causing the ship to rapidly lean to one side until it capsized, then drifted to a rocky stretch of seabed just outside the island's tiny port.

Survivors have described a delayed and confused evacuation. The bodies of two victims were never found, but they were declared dead after a long search.

Couples Try Harder in Long-Distance Relationships New research published in the Journal of Communication suggests that people in long-distance relationships often have stronger bonds from more constant, and deeper, communication than normal relationships.

The belief is that geographical distance mobilizes parties to engage in deeper, more satisfying communication.

Communications researchers Drs. Crystal Jiang, City University of Hong Kong and Jeffrey Hancock, Cornell University, asked dating couples in long-distance and geographically close relationships to report their daily interactions over different media: face-to-face, phone calls, video chat, texting, instant messenger, and email.

Over a week, they reported to what extent they shared about themselves and experienced intimacy, and to what extent they felt their partners did the same thing.

When comparing the two types of relationships, Jiang and Hancock found that long-distance couples felt more intimate to each other, and this greater intimacy is driven by two tendencies: long-distance couples disclosed themselves more, and they idealized their partners? behaviors.

Interestingly, these two tendencies become more pronounced when couples communicated in text-based, asynchronous and mobile media because they made more efforts to overcome the media constraints.

Long-distance relationships have been unexplored for years. One of the reasons is that the general public believes they are rare and not normal.

Previous studies have focused on how couples cope with problems, such as jealousy and stress, but until recently, several studies have shown that long-distance relationships are not always problematic.

Some surveys even indicate that long-distance couples have equal or better relationship qualities than geographically close couples.

To address the difference of opinions, the current study was designed to observe what exactly happens in long-distance relational communication, particularly in comparison to geographically close ones.

Long-distance romance is much more common nowadays. Couples get separated for a variety of reasons, due to modern mobility, and they choose to maintain the relationships through all kinds of communication technologies.

Recent statistics show that 3 million married couples in the U.S. live apart; 25to 50 percent of college students are currently in long-distance relationships and up to 75 percent of them have engaged in one at some point. On the other hand, people think long-distance relationships are challenging.

?Indeed, our culture emphasizes being together physically and frequent face-to-face contact for close relationships, but long-distance relationships clearly stand against all these values. People don?t have to be so pessimistic about long-distance romance,? said Jiang.

?The long-distance couples try harder than geographically close couples in communicating affection and intimacy, and their efforts do pay back.?

Young Lebanese writer crowd funds university tuition

BEIRUT: More than 100 strangers are sending Zeina Abi Assy to New York City to study creative writing. ?Right now, I have 182 donors and 95 percent are Lebanese and Arab,? Abi Assy told The Daily Star Sunday, just hours before her monthlong, online fundraising campaign ended. ?I?m very, very, very overwhelmed. It feels like I belong to a beautiful community, I didn?t know how they would accept this.?

By ?this? Abi Assy meant crowd funding, a tool startup companies, nonprofits and, increasingly, university students are using to pool money through online donations. Crowd funding has become more popular in the country and region and websites have cropped up to serve the Middle East specifically.

Abi Assy, a 24-year-old from Jbeil, set a goal of $25,000 to fund the first year of her master?s program in creative writing at The New School in Manhattan. Monday morning, at the close of her campaign on crowd funding website Indiegogo, she had surpassed her target with a total of $25,145 and 200 donors.

For Abi Assy, the decision to raise money for her pricey master?s program in the United States came out of last resort, one she and those who helped her said could easily have flopped. ?It has been two months of tears and encouragement and happiness,? she said, as her campaign, with hours to go still needed 15 percent, or $3,750.

The draw of her campaign has been her emphasis on writing nonfiction, and using her future books to tell the stories of Beirut and Lebanon to a worldwide audience, she said. She is primarily interested in dispelling the myths about Lebanon while telling the stories of everyday life.

Her purpose comes at a timely moment, as Lebanon has crept back into international headlines after the war raging in next door Syria has led to a string of crises and security incidents here.

?I come from a group of friends where not two of us come from the same religion or the same sects,? she said. ?We?re not always dodging bullets. We live very regular lives.?

?Maybe we can be understood in a different way,? she added.

She decided to pursue writing in English because it?s the language in which she learned to write creatively. With a target audience outside the Arab-speaking world, she also sees English as a way to transmit her message as widely as possible, though she would love to develop her creative writing skills in Arabic.

To go to school in the United States, where university tuition is notoriously high and scholarships for foreign students are scarce, Abi Assy will have to pay a total of $50,000 over the next two years. Her decision to raise that money through crowd funding received its share of criticism, she said.

?Some said it?s like begging or it?s juvenile, that I?m taking the easy way to get money,? she said. ?Some people say I don?t deserve it because there are bigger things to give money to.?

Critics have lobbed the same criticism at university students raising money for tuition in other parts of the world, but that hasn?t stopped the trend from spreading.

Over the past year, Indiegogo has seen a 240 percent increase in campaigns in the education category, company spokeswoman Cara Morgan said.

Indiegogo declined to release specific numbers for the Middle East, but Morgan said, ?the platform has seen campaigns stemming from many countries in the region across creative, cause-related and entrepreneurial categories.?

Abi Assy became interested in crowd funding after a Lebanese friend studying at New York University in Manhattan used the fundraising platform to finance a documentary film project.

Locally grown crowd funding websites have also cropped up, including Aflamnah and Zoomaal, though most of the campaigns through these sites have an entrepreneurial focus. One major exception is a campaign by Lebanese Arabic rock band Mashrou? Leila to fund their next album on Zoomaal.

Most of the largest international crowd funding sites still have barriers that prevent Lebanese campaigns from succeeding. For example, the majority of crowd funding sites Abi Assy researched required PayPal, an online payment service that doesn?t operate in the country, said Rawane Khalil, a friend who helped run Abi Assy?s Indiegogo campaign.

Khalil said they ended up with Indiegogo because it was the only site they found that could accommodate Lebanese credit card numbers.

The success has awed Khalil, who said she was unsure about the outcome in the beginning.

?The Lebanese society is not used to it at all. It defies the Lebanese mentality,? she said. ?In the beginning, it was a 50-50 thing. I thought they would get a very good sum of money. But even anonymous people starting giving money, a couple people no one knows gave $500 each.?

About $7,000 was raised through offline donations that the pair later added online. The volume of these donations showed that even if people didn?t have credit cards or were wary of donating online ? something foreign for many Lebanese ? the campaign site was able to successfully promote her cause, Khalil said.

Abi Assy has inspired others to use crowd funding as a way to raise money for their projects, she said.

?A lot of people that don?t know Zeina and are not from our circle of friends ? they say maybe we should start one,? Khalil said. ?[Crowd funding] is like a way of giving power to people who don?t have a lot of money ? they can make things happen, anyone can help.?

India central bank take steps to ease rupee volatility

MUMBAI, July 15 (Reuters) - The Reserve Bank of India late on Monday announced measures to manage volatility in the rupee, including lifting two interest rates by 200 basis points each and a planned sale of 120 billion rupees ($2 billion) of government bonds on July 18.

The central bank said in a statement that it had adjusted the Marginal Standing Facility (MSF) and the Bank Rate to 10.25 percent each. Both rates were previously 8.25 percent.

The MSF is the rate at which banks can borrow from the central bank at an elevated rate against government securities during times of tight cash. The bank rate is a linked to the MSF.

India's main policy interest rate, the repo rate , is unchanged at 7.25 percent.

The rupee last week hit a record low of 61.21 to the dollar. ($1 = 59.9250 Indian rupees) (Reporting by Tony Munroe and Suvashree Dey Choudhury)
