Ravens upset Patriots 28-13 to reach Super Bowl

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) ? Look for lots of Harbaughs in New Orleans next week. Two of them will be working the sidelines in the Super Bowl.

Oh, brother!

John Harbaugh and his Baltimore Ravens set up a family reunion in the Big Easy, shutting down the New England Patriots 28-13 Sunday in the AFC championship game.

Waiting for them will be his younger brother Jim and the San Francisco 49ers, who beat Atlanta 28-24 for the NFC title. It's the first Super Bowl matching siblings as head coaches.

"I'd like to think that our two teams are very similar," said John, who is a year older than Jim. "I'd like to think when you look at those two teams, you are looking at mirror images of two football teams."

What the Ravens (13-6) are looking at is their first Super Bowl in 12 years, thanks to three touchdown passes from Joe Flacco and a defense led by Ray Lewis that made Tom Brady look downright ordinary.

It will be quite a last game for Lewis, the emotional linebacker who will retire after the matchup with the 49ers, who opened as a 5-point favorite.

"For me to come out and say that this is my last ride and for me now to be headed back to the Super Bowl, for the possibility of me possibly winning a second ring, how else do you cap off a career?" said Lewis, who had 14 tackles to give him 44 in three playoff games after missing 10 weeks with a torn left triceps.

As in the previous two playoff wins against Indianapolis and Denver, the Ravens were brilliant offensively in spots. This might be 17-year-veteran Lewis' team, but it's also Flacco's ? and the quarterback's six road wins are the most in playoff history.

He has eight touchdown passes and no interceptions in this postseason.

"We've always believed in Joe," Harbaugh said. "And for Joe to come out and to have this kind of a game and this kind of a stage three weeks in a row ..."

Flacco, whose contract ends after the Super Bowl, is the only quarterback to win a playoff game in each of his first five seasons. He was dynamic with his arm and precise with his decision making. Looking much more the championship passer than Brady did, his scoring throws of 11 and 3 yards to Anquan Boldin and 5 to Dennis Pitta all were perfect.

"We didn't come all the way here to play it safe and hope to win," Flacco said. "We came here to win the AFC championship game and you have to play to win."

The defense played as big a part, shutting out the league's highest-scoring offense in the second half, twice picking off Brady.

Brady was 67-0 at home when leading at halftime, but this was no contest in the second half.

"We got behind in the second half there and became one-dimensional," he said. "We just couldn't string enough good plays together to get the ball in the end zone."

It also was a first for the Patriots, who hadn't lost an AFC championship at home.

"We've lost before. It takes a while to get over," Brady said.

After they had avenged last year's AFC title game loss at Gillette Stadium, many of the Ravens gathered on the field jumping, chest-bumping and whooping before several thousand fans wearing Ravens jerseys ? mostly Lewis' No. 52 ? who remained in the stands.

New England (13-5) lost a home AFC title matchup for the first time in five games. The loss denied Brady and coach Bill Belichick a shot at their sixth Super Bowl. They've gone 3-2, losing their last two times in the big game.

Instead, it's the AFC North champion Ravens heading to the Big Easy, seeking their second NFL championship. San Francisco has won five.

One of the Harbaughs will grab his first ring as head coach.

"I don't know if we had a dream this big," John Harbaugh said. "We had a few dreams, we had a few fights, we had a few arguments ? just like all brothers."

The Ravens have gotten there the hard way, with no postseason bye. Then again, five of the last seven Super Bowl champions took that route.

The Ravens also were pushed into a second overtime in frigid Denver last weekend before eliminating Peyton Manning and the top-seeded Broncos.

And now they've cast aside the league's most successful franchise of the last dozen years.

"I'd probably say we came up a little short in every area," Belichick said.

New England, which hasn't won a Super Bowl since the 2004 season, had four injuries, the scariest when running back Stevan Ridley hurt his head when he was knocked flat by Bernard Pollard in the fourth quarter, forcing a fumble. Baltimore turned that into the final touchdown, on the only short scoring drive it had, 47 yards.

The touchdown by Pitta capped the Ravens' best drive of the game, covering 87 yards in 10 plays and made it 14-13. It started with a 15-yard defensive pass interference penalty, and it was an indication of things to come.

The Ravens gained just 130 yards in the first half, yet trailed by only six points.

Brady guided a 13-play drive to Stephen Gostkowski's 31-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead. Neither defense yielded a big play, and punters Zoltan Mesko and Sam Koch were the busiest guys on the field.

That changed when the teams switched sides for the second quarter. Baltimore again was pinned deep, at its 10, but Flacco led a 13-play drive. Ray Rice, whose 83-yard run on the Ravens' first play from scrimmage in their wild-card round victory here three years ago, ran left untouched for the TD.

Awakened by Baltimore's march, the Patriots staged a long one of their own, 79 yards, aided by a 15-yard personal foul by Ravens linebacker Dannell Ellerbe. Wes Welker picked up 24 yards on a short pass, then got free in the right corner of the end zone after a mix-up in the Ravens' secondary, making it 10-7.

It was 13-7 by halftime as Gostkowski connected from 25 yards, with New England outsmarting Baltimore several times. But Brady and Belichick made mental errors by not calling a timeout quickly enough after a short scramble by the 35-year-old quarterback. So the Patriots didn't get a shot at the end zone and Gostkowski made his second kick.

Shockingly for an offense that scored 557 points this season, that was it for New England.

"We are probably the only team in the AFC that matches up good with the boy, No. 12 over there and his coach," linebacker Terrell Suggs said of Brady and Belichick.

Now comes another intriguing matchup ? for everything.

NOTES: Brady has 5,949 yards passing, the most in NFL history for the postseason. He threw for 320 yards Sunday but was picked off twice in the fourth quarter. ... Patriots CB Aqib Talib hurt his thigh and DT Kyle Love injured his knee. Backup safety Patrick Chung was helped off the field after one play. ... Baltimore beat San Francisco 16-6 in the 2011 season.

JBL Rumble, OnBeat Mini and Charge spotted at CES, we go ears-on

JBL Rumble, OnBeat Mini and Charge spotted at CES, we go earson

One of the more colorful -- in the literal sense -- announcements during the CES build-up was the new line of Bluetooth speakers from JBL. Here at Pepcom we spotted them out in the wild, so thought we'd take the chance to go hands- and ears-on. The little guy, aka the Charge, was the first of the bunch we heard pumping out some tunes, and our inability to hear the company reps telling us more about it is testament to how loud it is for such a small device. The design of the Charge also looks -- objectively -- even better in real life. The modern design and materials work really well with the vibrant color schemes, and while we didn't have time to test out that 12-hour battery life, everything else looked pretty solid to us.

The middle baby of the trio -- the OnBeat Mini -- is much more demure, with the low-profile unit sitting discreetly on the table top, just quietly -- or loudly, rather -- getting on with pumping out the jams from the iPad mini perched on top of it. This, of course, puts Lightning connectivity center stage, and despite its diminutive form (the connector, not the iPad) Apple's mini tablet felt securely housed within the dock itself. Our favorite of the bunch would possibly be the Rumble -- not just because the name sounds like it means business, but also because the bold design and impressive, weighty sound seem fitting of the name. The whole front of the unit has the classic speaker grille-style finish, and despite looking like a heavyset piece of kit, it's surprisingly light, yet solid feeling. More pictures of the whole family can be found in out gallery.

The Best Bike-Sharing Program in the United States

Bicycles are seen in a rack at a bike sharing station January 25, 2011 in Washington, DC. Bicycles are seen in a rack at a bike sharing station in Washington, DC.

Photograph by KAREN BLEIER/AFP/Getty Images

If you had been handed, a decade ago, a map of the U.S. and asked to predict where the novel idea of bike sharing?then limited to a few small-scale projects in a handful of European cities, might first find its firmest footing, you probably would have laid your money on a progressive hub like Portland or Seattle or the regional poles of walkable urbanism, New York or San Francisco?all of which were scoring higher, those days, in surveys like Bicycling magazine?s list of most bikeable cities. But today, the nation?s largest, most successful bike-share program?in terms of size, ridership, and financial viability?is in Washington, D.C. How did D.C. accomplish this unlikely task?

The program was essentially born late one night, two decades ago, in a library.??

Paul DeMaio, an urban planning student at the University of Virginia, was doing Internet research (?pre-Google,?? he notes) when he stumbled upon images of ByCyklen, a new ?city bike? program launched by the city of Copenhagen. Enthralled by the idea, he visited the city, learned what he could about the system, and, eventually, distilled his findings into a master?s thesis on bike sharing. Which had about as much impact as the typical master?s thesis. ?No one was picking it up,? he recalls over coffee at D.C.?s Union Station. ?I was so upset. But as a 22-year-old, what are you going to do??

And so the idea, in the U.S. at least, lay dormant, as DeMaiso left school and went to work on traffic-calming projects for the city of Alexandria, Va. But DeMaio nurtured the idea, one of a small band of enthusiasts in the world of bike advocacy and in the fringe of city transportation departments, as it rose to prominence in Europe with popular programs like Paris? Velib and programs in Stockholm and Amsterdam, among others. And then one day he was talking with a local colleague?Jim Sebastian, the bicycle coordinator with D.C.?s Department of Transportation. The district?s contract for bus shelter advertising was coming up for renewal. ?I said, ?Hey Jim, this is what they?re doing in Europe?they?re offering bike-sharing services as part of an outdoor advertising contract.? The DDOT, then led by Dan Tangherlini, got behind the idea. And, so tucked into the many-page request for proposals was, he says, a ?very short mention of bike sharing.? One hundred bikes, 10 stations.

Paul DeMaio, MetroBike LLC Paul DeMaio

Courtesy Paul DeMaio.

And so, in 2008, a few decades after DeMaio?s Copenhagen epiphany and a few years after the RFP?Clear Channel, the winner of the bus shelter contract, ??wanted to get all their bus shelters out first, and then ? look into this weird bike thing,? jokes DeMaio?Smart Bike DC launched. It was, by most accounts, a noble failure. There were too few stations and bikes to form a meaningful and useful network. The system offered only long-term memberships, rather than offering short-term access via credit card. In fact, it didn?t take credit cards at all (so much for capturing the tourist market). Building stations took a lot of time and money. DeMaio himself says he used it only a handful of times.

But D.C. had launched the first commercial bike-sharing program in a major U.S. city, so the idea was planted. And even as Smart Bike was foundering, the ground was being laid for a new, larger, regional bike-share system. DeMaio, who now runs his own transport consultancy (and who, in a historical irony of sorts, recently worked on a newly reinvigorated bike-sharing program for the city of Copenhagen), began talking about an improved bike-sharing system with Chris Hamilton, the head of the Commuter Services Bureau of the transportation division in Arlington County, a portion of Virginia just over the river from D.C. ?He basically said, ?Why aren?t we doing this yet?? ? says DeMaio. Dennis Leach, Arlington?s transportation director, also signed on. ?He?s a bike commuter,? says DeMaio, ?and when we bring him an idea of how we can make bicycling in Arlington better, he jumps at it.?

Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) Commissioner Gabe Klein Chicago Department of Transportation (CDOT) Commissioner Gabe Klein

Photograph courtesy of Gabe Klein (CDOT)

In D.C., Gabe Klein, a former VP at car-sharing pioneer ZipCar and political neophyte, was appointed head of the DOT. He had an ?action agenda,? as he calls it, with more than 100 items on it?one of which was to launch a larger bike-share system. ?Having come from ZipCar,? says Klein, now transportation commissioner for the city of Chicago (which, like New York, is launching a big bike-share system this spring), ?I knew that any sort of nodal business was only as effective as the number of nodes you have.? While SmartBike was useful in terms of getting early adopters onboard and the public used to the idea, it was a trip to Montreal, with its Bixi system, that hinted at what a bike-share system could look like. SmartBike stations, Klein says, ?were a construction project. It took months. You had to get PEPCO [the local electrical utility] out there, it had to be wired.? Bixi?s stations, by contrast, were solar-powered and modular. Where it could take three months to build a SmartBike station, Bixi stations could be set up in three days.

Shortly after his appointment in 2008, Klein, who had worked with Arlington County on ZipCar, began conversations on creating a regional bike-share system. It soon became clear that ClearChannel, which had sponsored the SmartBike experiment, was out. He then he went to Adrian Fenty, D.C.?s newly elected, and popular, mayor, and said he wanted to launch a new, larger bike-share system. ?He said three things. Number one: Can it be the best out there? I said yes. Can it be the biggest in the U.S.? I said yes. Can you build it such a way that it will be cost-neutral to the city? I said I think so.?

Launching a sponsorless bike-share system intended to break even, or even make money, was unprecedented. And having no sponsor made raising capital a challenge, but D.C.-area governments scavenged for the money. ?We got lucky,? says DeMaio. In Arlington, the Virginia Department of Rail kicked in $200,000; a business-improvement district in Crystal City matched that. The county chipped in more. In D.C., the government used money from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality (CMAQ) improvement program. It also tapped its own innovative revenue stream. Through an ?enterprise fund? within DOT?funded by things like parking revenues (which, Klein says, had gone up some 400 percent thanks to new technologies like ?pay by phone?)?Klein says there was ?money to match the ongoing growth of the program.? Bike sharing, like all politics, is the art of the possible.

We're live from CES 2013 in Las Vegas!

DNP We're live from CES 2013!

The Las Vegas Convention Center's expansive exhibition space may not be open for another five days, but we're already on site, gearing up for the CES madness to come and setting up shop in our temporary headquarters -- that beautiful trailer just above. Sure, we have a pretty good idea of which new mobile gadgets we might see -- and what products not to expect -- and it's pretty much a given that Windows 8 will be just about everywhere, but as always the show is bound to bring some surprises. For now, though, we'll all have to sit tight as thousands of exhibitors put the final lavish touches on their enormous booths. In the meantime, get a taste of the pre-show scene at the LVCC in the gallery just below.
